Tribute to “Chewey & Tubs” :
 Inline image

Today, two veterans in long standing are retiring from the OTHC. They’ll both be missed in so many unique ways. We will miss your presence on & off the rink. We will miss your good humor, your willingness to participate  – especially when we were facing some real obstacles but we will miss most of all your personalities. Thank you for that. Thank you for all you have contributed to this organization.
I remember a Lake Placid tournament in 2004 with the VIPERS, and a younger Chewie was our goalie. I was trying to nap in my room but Chewie – who was in the adjacent room – would have none of that, and knocked incessantly on the wall while chuckling until such time I woke up, got dressed, and went out for a few jars with him. I had an awesome time that night, and really got to know him so much better.  Thanks Chewie! That is him in a nutshell, and I’ll never forget that. He is a terrific teammate, and I don’t think I ever saw him get rattled. The same goes for Jimmy Tubbs. JT is a stalwart who never left anything on the rink – he always gave you 100% and you never saw Tubby come unglued. Goals and assists didn’t matter. He played intense, and was one of the most honest players I’ve had the pleasure of sharing ice with. And he could hoist a beverage or three!
I want to wish you both well. I know you plan to relax on Sundays now. I hope you enjoy and find new meanings beyond Sunday night hockey. You deserve all the best. May you find it. Thanks for your friendship – I’ll never forget you guys.
Stew

Big Thanks to Captain Stew’bing!!  Stew has confirmed his room at Becker B&B and will be down from Montreal for our local Outdoor Pond Hockey Tournament. See “Wally Ice Fest” info below-à Stew is a Free Agent and looking to Hook-up with anyone forming a team in the Muskie Division, or whatever works.

Jersey Retirement- Stewart Hatchell #8:

As Bobby Becker put it so well, “I feel like there was a death in the family” which really nails my feelings (and I know I speak for the masses here). So it is with regret, I must tell you that we will be missing one of our most Senior Members. Stew Hatchell is leaving us this week, to go back home to Montreal and care for his biological family.
 10453444_10152802441863541_7165767735969739163_n
For as long as there has been an Over35 league, Stew has been a part of our hockey Family. He is more like the founding Father, as Stew embraced the whole idea when it was presented at a meeting in 2005. He became my wingman, right then and there—told me, you can count on me. And I have ever since. He took on the ugly role of Disciplinarian, but put a positive spin on that too—naming it the “Fun Police”. Also, I asked him to serve as Captain (aka- “Captain Stew’bing”) and Stew has been a solid leader until his knees wouldn’t allow regular attendance, when he didn’t want to let the guys down. Captaining the SteelHeads, Vipers, & Chiefs; he had always picked the players up and left them with a positive impression and wanting to hear more. Hearing those Stories in the Locker Room, Jokes at the Bar, or Coaching from the Bench has always been a much appreciated part of our League. Stew-iscms and sayings will be showing up on T-shirts for years to come… but for now, things will be sadly quieter.

Please Join us (ALL Members welcome) this Sunday in our Send-off to the big guy. We’ll Retire his Jersey and share some Beers, great Stories, and some Laughs. I suggest you wear a #8, in his Honor.
 8
I am welcoming Stew to play in any Game he wishes during this special evening. The Blue Squid had caught wind of this and embraced him with an honorary Roster spot in the 9:30 game. So, Photo Opp and Ceremony will be held earlier at 7:45pm.

Fall 2016 Playoff Update Dec 18th

OTHC Members,
Playoff STANDINGS are Updated/ Posted Below->  All Games expected to be on time tonight.
Playoff UPDATE: The 3rd Points-Based round has one more Game(early Game for SteelHeads) to be completed. We have many close finishes in the middle of the pack, so the outcome of this last game could have implications on how the Squid and Loons will finish. Because the “Goals Allowed(GA)” becomes an important determining factor, it could change things if the Steelheads lose by 4 or more Goals.
 –
For Tonight’s schedule(below) you will see Two Options for the Teams playing in the 8:15 and 9:30pm games. 4th and 5th place depend on whether the Steelheads Win/Lose in the 6:00pm game.  The Blue Squid will be present for the 8:15 game and are prepared to wait if they must to play the Brewins at 9:30, as they earned the position to play the Lowest Seed. The Loons determine their own destiny and hope the chance to stay alive. Over-Time format will now shift in this Final Round(12/18 & 1/8) of play to a Sudden-Death format. Here is a good look at your Schedule for tonight:

Banquet / Awards

No replies or interest shown… please bring your own Christmas Cheer… You get an award, and You get an award, … everyone gets an award for being awesome. In absence of our members voting, I have some of my own Awarding to do, that all will surely agree with:

One Award that is an easy choice is Commissioner’s Appointment as IronmanTed Hosler, in his first season as a Captain he has kept the Steelheads swimming upstream. After picking up a broken team with 4 missing players, he managed to put all the pieces in place, in 2nd place for regular season…and dropping a few notches to 4th seed in Playoffs. While some of the team are out big game hunting and spawning around, #26 will rally the troops for a real challenge this week, in the face of elimination.

Honorable mention is a tie going to two Goalies- Jason Hoffman and Charlie-Chuck Ritchie. These guys helped get the Loons through a season with their regular Randy Heller. Not only that, but they back-up anyone else that can’t make it. Solid guys, they both can be counted on, to be at the rink Hours before the actual game.

“Goalie Who Always Shows Up” Guy
We all know that goalies and referees are a necessary evil in Beer League. Yes, goalies can be weird but it balances out. You put up with them being weird and they show up so you can play a weekly beer league game. In all seriousness, goalies put up with a lot of crap from players. Each game they likely see at least 4 breakaways, multiple 2 on 1’s, and countless giveaways to opposing snipers in the slot. Finding a goalie that always shows up and doesn’t threaten to kill every d-guy on the team each game is critical to becoming the ultimate beer league team. There is only 1 thing that’s more important than “Goalie Who Always Shows Up” Guy.

7th Man Award (Blue Squid)-In case you are unfamiliar, “great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice”    Daryl Speicher has been a big part of keeping the Squid alive. Playing through affliction, “Santa’s got the Gout” has been heard too often this season, so he hobbled into the locker room the last few weeks with tender, swollen feet. Then, was able to get the skates laced, only to step in front of a Clapper…taking it, where else? You guessed it, right on the “G” in his Grafs, or is that for the Gout? He is solid on the forecheck and gets in the way a lot…in a Good way, the Shot-blocking way.  Santa has a lot in his Lap, with busy schedule this time of year, but he’s the first one to type the “In” response back to Captain JK.

With the above announcements, I urge the Captains to follow suit and get back to me with their choices for “7th Man” on their teams. I will also ask that all members send me Votes for the following:
·        Lady Byng, most sportsmanlike=
·        Chuck Norris, best D=
·        Hatchell best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey=
·        Vezina, best G=
·        Calder, best R=
·        Rocket Richard, Top scorer=
·        Conn Smythe, MVP=

Tailgating / Locker Room Talk

Well, maybe we should add one more to the above choices?

The “Always Brings Beer” Guy
Does anything need to be said about this guy? This guy is a cornerstone of the team. He loves hockey, he loves his team, and he shows his appreciation by bringing the adult league nectar of the gods…. Beer!

Something was said, by ‘Danny Elbows’-    “Donated beer leftovers to the Brewins this week.  Some of these were in there.  Just sayin…”

“A few years ago, I began noticing many of my friends and family members giving up traditional soda for flavored sparkling water,” said Canadian Mike, OTHC member and part of the innovation team behind Truly Spiked & Sparkling. “I started playing around with alcoholic versions as a side project over a year ago, realizing there was a need for something clean, crisp and sparkling, like traditional sparkling water, but for times when you want to imbibe! After much experimentation, we created the recipe for Truly Spiked & Sparkling and knew we had something great – refreshing, with a hint of fruit, but doesn’t fill you up or break the calorie bank.”

Fall 2016 Week #11

OTHC Members,
The Black Friday Iron Man Tournament (announcement is below) has extra room in the OTHC Division…Please consider joining us for a fun Skate to work off some of that Thanksgiving meal. Notify Sterry immediately.
FINAL STANDINGS are Updated/ Posted Below-> (due to Byes, and some teams not playing 11 Games yet, the Final Standings are based only on each team’s first (10) Games. This doesn’t change our projections from last week when we plugged-in teams into the Schedule). Because a few teams still have not taken their Byes yet, we are still working out the last 2 weeks of Schedule on how to fit them into  a 3-Round, Point-based structure of Playoffs.
NOTE: Standings on website are not correct because they have not been adjusted.  Correct standings are below.
Congratulations to Red Storm for a First place finish! Jason Hoffman has asked that I make mention that many teams have shown poor attendance during the Sunday after Thanksgiving in past years. Don’t let us know you need a Goalie at the last minute…let us know tonightso it can be worked out.
And, Good Luck to all of our Teams as we begin our Playoff Runs. The top finishing Teams have earned their way into an easier Schedule run of playing the teams finishing with a weaker showing in the Standings It will be a Points-Based Tournament for 3 weeks. With 2 Points for every win and 1 for a Tie, many teams end up close in the Standings. Keep in mind that Goals Against(GA) becomes an important determining factor. At the bottom of this message is a look at the Stats & Standings from our Regular Season play. Over-Time format will continue to be the same as used in Regular Season Play (5-on-5 for 5 mins). Only the Final Night of play becomes a Sudden-Death format.

Black Friday Iron Man Tournament:

Locker Room Talk
I recommend you never forget about Beer-Duty. Here is a transcript of the roasting given to Blue Squid #33, “Canadian Mike” as verified by your commissioner. All of you are welcome to join in:

Canadian Mike: “I’m in boys and I’ll bring beer since I screwed you guys last time, eh.
John Kennedy: “Are you sure?
CM:  “No worries, I got this. I’m going to bring a little extra so we can celebrate the end of the season, eh.
JK:  “Good idea. Game time 9:45pm”
CM: 9:45p, “yup, I got this, eh.

—9:40—
Bachman: “Yo, has anyone seen Canadian Mike?
JK:   “He’ll be here for sure, he’s got beer”
BB: “ Bro, that kid is cutting it close, and I’m thirsty. Guess I’m not going to get my pre-game buzz.

—10:00—
Hank:  “It’s a good thing this game is delayed, gives Mike a chance to still make it.
JK:  “He’s a man of his word, he’ll be here.
Hank:” Awesome, I’m already thirsty!

—11:15—
Tommy:  “Nice game boys! 4-2 win, that felt good. You know what would really feel good?
Wettstein:  “I don’t know, maybe a Labatt?
Jeff:  “Yeah, that would good really nice with my hat trick tonight.
Becker:  “It’s alright boys, we’ll steal Mera’s beer”

—12:00am—
CM:  …..?…..

Thank You,
OTHC Commissioner
