Hockey Weekend Across America

Hockey Week Across America begins Sunday (Feb. 19) and runs through Feb. 26. Typically a weekend celebration, USA Hockey expanded the initiative to a week this year in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Hockey Weekend Across America. Started in 2008 by USA Hockey, HWAA is an effort to celebrate the game of hockey and those involved at all levels and also expose the game to new audiences. This year’s week-long celebration includes a special theme for each day, including the traditional themes of Wear Your Favorite Hockey Jersey Day (Friday), Try Hockey Day (Saturday) and Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes (Sunday), but this year also includes individual days to salute players (Monday), coaches (Tuesday), officials (Wednesday) and local rinks (Thursday).Interested in hosting a Try Hockey for Free event? Click here for more information or to register.

Update Winter 2017, Week #2

OTHC Members,

Registration period is closed; it will be up to you to contact the Rink on your own time in order to get reinstated. Thanks to all of the many Members that have completed things!

Safety First!  I have been lobbied by a few of our senior members playing OTHC since 2005, so in the words of Hill Street Blues Sergeant Phil Esterhaus, “Let’s be careful out there!”. We’re all getting older and fatter, some or our +50 yr old Goalies just don’t need a 250 lb load falling on them when they are stretched out and prone to injury. So, please understand this is why everyone is sensitive around the net and #1 cause of injuries and issues. USA Hockey has strict Goalie Interference rules to help keep them safe and our Refs have noted that they will be calling it to letter of the Law. If you wrecklessly run yourself into the Crease, you go to the Box. And you show absolutely no class by Disrepecting and Snowing a Goalie! Goalies have special priviledges, but they are also sternly warned about coming out and diving at Pucks, for their own safety and wellbeing. All Players are advised not to Dive or Slide-Tackle… for easy illustration, we’ll call this the “Price Chopper Ed rule”( he corrected his enthusiastic game, after it was pointed out). Nobody wants sharp skates coming at them, and it’s never intentional (not implying it is). But the odds of injury rise with the level of one’s skates rising from accidental falls and trips. Stay in Control and don’t skate into other players.

You didn’t learn to drive at 60 mph, so slow down if you don’t know how to pump the brakes. Whenever a player leaves his feet (even to black a shot), they become a major trip hazard and furthermore, you become a hazard to yourself. We had Jon Rosenthal almost have his arm completely severed when he went down to block a shot, and someone skated over it. Marty Moucha had to use a belt as a tourniquette, and it wasn’t pretty. We don’t want to change his nickname to “One-Armed Ed”. And never yank down another player with you. We just had Michael Gellatt from the Knight’s top Junior team lose 6 teeth and part of his upper jaw, when another player drug him down forcefully, hitting the top of the Dasher rail on the way down. We need to avoid unnecessary falls, so again, stay in control and stay on your feet.

Super Bowl Sunday Skate:

Since we have so many teams not skating for the first 2 weeks of February, I am proposing a Super Sunday Skate with hosts- Vince Rodriguez and Jason Crandall. Jay is nice enough to come in and work when they would normally close, please make it worth his while. Please Pay Vinder approx $10 to $15 (or bit more if Food involved) based on how many show. From a sample at last week’s game, I had counted 12 of the first 15 guys I asked.

Time would be 5:45 to 7:00pm, Please Speak with/ Reply to Vince directly, so he can plan accordingly at:
Vince R(#16 Brewins).   vinrodd16@gmail.com

Not one word from Ben Wettstein (#9 Blue Squid) or Joel Koos(#76 SteelHeads) on Jersey Retirement?  Guys, if you are still around, please contact me.

OTHC Hockey Winter/Spring 2017 Season – Schedule

** Apologies for the late post to the website — too busy with WallyIceFest page! **
OTHC Members,

Welcome to another great season of Sunday Night Hockey. The Rosters and Schedule is included below….along with a Rookie Introduction which is worth reviewing for all members. For Winter/Spring 2017, the OTHC will be sticking with 7 teams. This will mean we continue to get Byes and Double-Headers. We’ll take the Byes in the first half, to avoid playing Late; and Double up as we get into March when the times begin earlier and allow a 4th Timeslot that is not extremely late. A night off from time to time is not so bad, especially during winter travel.
And in case of inclement weather, please watch your Email for Cancellations or Delays up to 4:00pm every Sunday.

Your Captains have blessed the Rosters for Winter 2017 and all are anxious to get back on the ice. Our Teams are Full, and we are not accepting new players at this time. We will look at adding the 8th team in the Fall. The only incomplete part is how the playoffs will shape up. Our Captains will be discussing avoiding Double-headers in the Playoffs. In any case, it’s a fun ride and I hope you enjoy the spirit and comraderie of the Old Time Hockey Club.

Good Luck guys …take a look at the very bottom to see what team has contracted you ->>>

REGISTRATION:
  • Registration Period for only first weeks: (Draft & Week #1)
    • Strict requirement that each Member come early and complete forms
    • No Un-Registered Players will be permitted to take Ice after week #1
    • If unpaid balance after week-2 (and you have not communicated to Rink); you will be rmoved from the Roster, and cannot take the ice.
  • You may Pay by Credit Card; Cash; Check directly: Pay at the rink.
    • Price is $270.

·         All Players must be USA Hockey Registered before taking ice. Your USA Hockey # is required and Proof of Registation must be provided at time of League Registration.
  • Everyone has an individual responsibility to complete Registration and Payment Immediately so our Club can record Stats.
JERSEYS:
OTHC League jerseys have recently changed hands to now be managed by your Captains. New members should talk to your captain about purchasing a Spare. We do uphold a Strict Requirement that all Members in the League MUST WEAR A MATCHING TEAM JERSEY WITH A UNIQUE NUMBER. All players have participated in becoming a Team Member by investing in a Team Jersey, to be fair to them and our league it is expected that new players follow suit.
SWEATER SWAP:
ATTN: Please bring your old jersey to the Pro Shop and we will try our best to get you situated with swapping to someone else’s available jersey.
SCHEDULE:
Attached is a Confirmed Schedule for the first month of Season. We play only on Sunday evenings. Realize that we will begin a little later in Jan/Feb following High School League play. Please let me know if our OTHC, Private Rental, or Select Open Hockey would work.
TAILGATING:
Each team takes their turn of hosting for ONE week during the season. Each team fully voluteers all of it’s rostered members to contribute and each guy simply brings in a dish. That team will typically play the Early game and then setup their dishes and fire-up the Grill(or Cater in dishes) right after playing. Each team has taken pride in hosting and some teams have tried to outdo others in the Grilling category… Food Hosting begins in the 2nd half of the season(around Easter) and each team will take just one turn….
VOLUNTEERS:
Your captains help collect Fees, attend Meetings, keep order on the team, and get everyone scheduled for Food & Beverages, etc.. please help them. We could always use more volunteers. We need folks to send in game highlights, participate on Fun Police committee, take part in hosting our Summer “Dave Burke Tournament”, etc… This is your Hockey Club, it is what you make of it. We would like everyone to participate and hang around to socialize with Members from other teams to get the full flavor of a Hockey Night out within this great community of guys with the same love of the game.
Thanks for Participating & Enjoy the Club,
Chris Becker
Old Time Hockey Club Commissioner

OTHC Hockey Update- Fall 2016 Finals Night!

OTHC Members,
Happy 2017!  Due to a series of playing an extended fall 2016 season and Snowed-out games, it is time to get back to Hockey. The 2017 Winter Season begins next Sunday at 6:45. You need to let us know of change of status so we can properly adjust Rosters. Captains will meet for an initial discussion before the games start this week.

Playoff UPDATE: The 3rd Points-Based round was concluded and Steelheads Mucked & Grinded out both games of their Double-Header earning a spot to play on Finals night. Brewins showed a flash of Shock and Awe to keep their hot streak alive. Both these teams will play in the first game of the evening. We know it’s going to be a battle to the finish and the game has already sold out. Meanwhile, the red Strom have been stagnant for nearly a month due to Byes, and Snowed-out games. Who will be left standing, and strong enough to Raise the Kielbasa Cup?

OTHC Night Out
This just came together for a Special private viewing of World Junior Hockey Gold medal game tonightUSA vs Canada 8:00pm – NHL channel @ Sarah Street Grill. Thanks to Dave Lapoint for putting this together. We do have more Canadian Fan representation (about 7) than USA, at this time, on our own turf…. What would Herb Brooks say? Is Tonight, our Night?

Fall 2016 Playoff Update Dec 18th

OTHC Members,
Playoff STANDINGS are Updated/ Posted Below->  All Games expected to be on time tonight.
Playoff UPDATE: The 3rd Points-Based round has one more Game(early Game for SteelHeads) to be completed. We have many close finishes in the middle of the pack, so the outcome of this last game could have implications on how the Squid and Loons will finish. Because the “Goals Allowed(GA)” becomes an important determining factor, it could change things if the Steelheads lose by 4 or more Goals.
 –
For Tonight’s schedule(below) you will see Two Options for the Teams playing in the 8:15 and 9:30pm games. 4th and 5th place depend on whether the Steelheads Win/Lose in the 6:00pm game.  The Blue Squid will be present for the 8:15 game and are prepared to wait if they must to play the Brewins at 9:30, as they earned the position to play the Lowest Seed. The Loons determine their own destiny and hope the chance to stay alive. Over-Time format will now shift in this Final Round(12/18 & 1/8) of play to a Sudden-Death format. Here is a good look at your Schedule for tonight:

Banquet / Awards

No replies or interest shown… please bring your own Christmas Cheer… You get an award, and You get an award, … everyone gets an award for being awesome. In absence of our members voting, I have some of my own Awarding to do, that all will surely agree with:

One Award that is an easy choice is Commissioner’s Appointment as IronmanTed Hosler, in his first season as a Captain he has kept the Steelheads swimming upstream. After picking up a broken team with 4 missing players, he managed to put all the pieces in place, in 2nd place for regular season…and dropping a few notches to 4th seed in Playoffs. While some of the team are out big game hunting and spawning around, #26 will rally the troops for a real challenge this week, in the face of elimination.

Honorable mention is a tie going to two Goalies- Jason Hoffman and Charlie-Chuck Ritchie. These guys helped get the Loons through a season with their regular Randy Heller. Not only that, but they back-up anyone else that can’t make it. Solid guys, they both can be counted on, to be at the rink Hours before the actual game.

“Goalie Who Always Shows Up” Guy
We all know that goalies and referees are a necessary evil in Beer League. Yes, goalies can be weird but it balances out. You put up with them being weird and they show up so you can play a weekly beer league game. In all seriousness, goalies put up with a lot of crap from players. Each game they likely see at least 4 breakaways, multiple 2 on 1’s, and countless giveaways to opposing snipers in the slot. Finding a goalie that always shows up and doesn’t threaten to kill every d-guy on the team each game is critical to becoming the ultimate beer league team. There is only 1 thing that’s more important than “Goalie Who Always Shows Up” Guy.

7th Man Award (Blue Squid)-In case you are unfamiliar, “great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice”    Daryl Speicher has been a big part of keeping the Squid alive. Playing through affliction, “Santa’s got the Gout” has been heard too often this season, so he hobbled into the locker room the last few weeks with tender, swollen feet. Then, was able to get the skates laced, only to step in front of a Clapper…taking it, where else? You guessed it, right on the “G” in his Grafs, or is that for the Gout? He is solid on the forecheck and gets in the way a lot…in a Good way, the Shot-blocking way.  Santa has a lot in his Lap, with busy schedule this time of year, but he’s the first one to type the “In” response back to Captain JK.

With the above announcements, I urge the Captains to follow suit and get back to me with their choices for “7th Man” on their teams. I will also ask that all members send me Votes for the following:
·        Lady Byng, most sportsmanlike=
·        Chuck Norris, best D=
·        Hatchell best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey=
·        Vezina, best G=
·        Calder, best R=

Tailgating / Locker Room Talk

Well, maybe we should add one more to the above choices?

The “Always Brings Beer” Guy
Does anything need to be said about this guy? This guy is a cornerstone of the team. He loves hockey, he loves his team, and he shows his appreciation by bringing the adult league nectar of the gods…. Beer!

Something was said, by ‘Danny Elbows’-    “Donated beer leftovers to the Brewins this week.  Some of these were in there.  Just sayin…”

“A few years ago, I began noticing many of my friends and family members giving up traditional soda for flavored sparkling water,” said Canadian Mike, OTHC member and part of the innovation team behind Truly Spiked & Sparkling. “I started playing around with alcoholic versions as a side project over a year ago, realizing there was a need for something clean, crisp and sparkling, like traditional sparkling water, but for times when you want to imbibe! After much experimentation, we created the recipe for Truly Spiked & Sparkling and knew we had something great – refreshing, with a hint of fruit, but doesn’t fill you up or break the calorie bank.”

Thank You,
